Eye Makeup – From How to Tips to Pencils – the Natural Way

I never forget the eyes. Whether I’m heading to the corner to pick up some milk or out to a black-tie affair (which hasn’t happened, in, um . . . forever—definitely accepting invitations), I never forget my eyeshadow. Under eye concealer is non-optional, but from there it only gets more fun. I believe in the less-is-more, wear-makeup-so-it-doesn’t-look-like-you’re-wearing-makeup approach and so use a light hand, but experiment with varying products and colors. And as always, I seek out products that are natural and/or organic.

Outfit yourself with the following items and your peepers will be ready for any occasion:

Nobody appreciates mascara that flakes into the eyes—especially mascara that’s concocted with a host of toxic chemicals. Not good. Not good at all. Save your eyes while lengthening your lashes with Lavera Volume Mascara (21.99). Made with organic jojoba and organic rose and free from synthetic preservatives, perfumes, colorants and mineral oil products, this is clearly not your average mascara.

One of the coolest innovations in modern cosmetics has to be multi-use makeup. Kiss My Face gets in on the game with 3-Way Color for Lips, Cheeks & Eyes ($9.19). Enriched with olive and mango butter, armed with SPF 8 and free from toxic chemicals and preservatives, this little tube goes far.

Why buy one or two single eyeshadows when you can set yourself up with an entire palatte? NVEY ECO Organic Eye Shadow Palette ($61) is made from natural ingredients like jojoba oil, carrot oil and chamomile extract and comes in a variety of color lines—five to each palette—though I’m partial to the summery shades.

Sometimes I feel like I’m in an active fight to stay cool (if you’re not careful, that’s what parenthood will do—zap the cool right from your body.) And a surprising weapon in this fight is eyeliner. Before I gave birth I held the idea that mothers never wore eyeliner—that it was a makeup item reserved for the young and carefree. Not anymore. Eyeliner is where it’s at and I’m digging this Kajal Eyeliner by Dr. Hauschka ($17.95). Each eye lining pencil is made from organically and biodynamically grown plant oils, essential oils and plant extracts and has not one synthetic fragrance, preservative, color or GMO. Phew.
