This was done as an assignment for my business writing class, the Self-Sort Recycle Bin won me an award from NASA/Emhart create the future competition. Unfortunately, not enough to prototype. Maybe you will find of interest? It is one of many, I'm a techno-enviromentalist.

(Dear Environmentalist,

Your practical concern for the environment, and marketing of products that are eco-friendly are an inspiration. Fans of your publications, and visitors to your web-sites are just the sort of environmentally concerned audiences we are trying to reach for the marketing of our Self-Sort Recycle Bin.

I hope that you will find the Self-Sort Recycle Bin (SSRB) to be not only interesting to your audience, but also applicable in your own business and home use. The SSRB uses simple technology to reduce the amount of time and effort needed to sort materials. This is especially appealing in office applications, where time is a prime resource.

We have found that most businesses appreciate the simplicity of our scan and shoot method, and local recycling centers have been appreciative of the decrease in workload our product provides. Additionally home-users have found that the product is convenient to use, and easy to learn. I am particularly pleased with this aspect, my friend’s two-year old loves to scan, and this leads me to believe that education markets will be pleased with the product as well.

SSRB Summary: The SSRB-Bus uses a 360 barcode scanner to scan the barcode (which is required on all commercially marketed products.) It references this with the UPC Database, and our personal materials reference service, either on the stored database or through a wireless connection. The SSRB-Home uses a standard barcode scanner (which decreases the price). Both models use this information to sort to the proper bin, which stores the contents in flash memory. This allows for poly-material refuse to be re-directed for processing.

Customer predictions: It is my belief that your audiences are precisely the people most likely to invest in the SSRB. I intend to market to both businesses and individuals, and the techno-savvy individuals I think will be most interested in investing in this products are likely to frequent your sites, as I do myself. Web-surfing eco-conscious individuals are likely to have the inclination to trust a new technology, that may have some “hippies” saying no way, man. I’m counting on word of mouth from these individuals, I believe that they will pass the information on to employers.

Sincerely,
Nathan Carlson
