Don Your Bicycles: The Brita Climate Ride is Back

The Brita Climate Ride is back again this year and once again I’ll be setting aside my lazy credentials for 5 days and join over two-hundred riders on the 300-Mile ride from New York City to Washington DC in an all-out and entirely exhausting effort to raise awareness about climate change and support solutions like renewable energy. Fortunately, I’ll benefit from my experience of learning how to pitch a tent, a skill I nearly mastered during last year’s ride (watch the video) since we camp out at stops along the route. It’s a gut check kind of ride especially when some mornings have the riders up before dawn to get on the road very early in recognition of the long day ahead. But that’s also what makes it such a fun adventure and inspiring experience. There truly is nothing like the feeling of being up before dawn with a group of others who are committed to the same cause and are setting out to push their limits to do something about it. Plus, you can usually find a place to stop for chocolate along the way.

The Brita Climate Ride is by far the most rewarding environmental event I’ve ever participated in. I heard this morning from Geraldine Carter, one of the event’s co-founders, that a few spaces are still available for additional riders to join. Just a few days ago Dr. James Hansen, head of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and renowned climatologist, announced that he’ll ride this year. Other riders include Colin Beavan, aka No Impact Man; Friis Arne Petersen – Denmark’s Ambassador to the US; and Wood “I’m pacing myself” Turner, Executive Director of Climate Counts. Not only do you get to ride and enjoy the beautiful fall weather, but you get to do it with people on the front lines of positive environmental change.

(Here’s me from last year. See, I was still smiling – on the outside – at the end of the ride.)

If you can’t make the ride and still want to contribute to the cause, you can still do so. Our fundraising efforts are in full effect. If you think you’d like to participate click here to be taken to my Climate Ride page.
